WhatsApp Introduces Usernames For Enhanced Privacy

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that allows users to create unique usernames, potentially changing the way people connect on the platform.

This update aims to provide an additional layer of privacy and security for users. According to WhatsApp, the feature is designed to give users more control over their online presence.

The new feature allows users to create usernames that can be used to connect with others, reducing the need to share phone numbers. “This feature is all about giving users more control over their experience on WhatsApp,” the company said. Usernames must contain at least one letter, can include lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores, but cannot start with “www.” or consist solely of numbers or symbols.

One of the benefits of this feature is improved privacy. Users can maintain their privacy while still being able to connect with others. This is particularly useful for people who want to avoid sharing their phone numbers with strangers. “The ability to create a username instead of sharing your phone number is a game-changer for privacy,” said one user.

The feature is also expected to make it easier for people to connect with others globally. With usernames, users won’t need to know country codes or phone numbers to connect with others. This could potentially lead to more international connections and collaborations.

However, there are also potential concerns around username squatting and impersonation. Desirable usernames may be taken quickly, potentially leading to fake accounts or username selling. Scammers may also create fake accounts pretending to be real people or businesses.

The feature is currently being tested in WhatsApp’s beta versions, and there’s no confirmed global release date yet. However, insiders suggest it could roll out later in 2025. As one user noted, “This feature has the potential to revolutionize the way we connect on WhatsApp.”
