Matthew Miller, the Department Spokesperson for the United States, praised the Malagasy people for actively participating in the presidential elections held on November 16.

The United States has expressed its commitment to collaborating with President-elect Rajoelina, the government, and the citizens of Madagascar to foster the nation’s development while emphasizing the importance of upholding human rights.

While acknowledging the overall calm and peaceful conduct of election day in most areas, the United States highlighted serious concerns regarding the electoral process.

Various stakeholders, including Malagasy citizens and both domestic and international election observers, have raised alarms about irregularities during the elections. Moreover, the statement noted that numerous recommendations from the 2018 and 2019 elections remain unaddressed.

The National Independent Elections Commission is strongly urged by the United States to take immediate action to rectify these deficiencies.

The U.S. government has called on Malagasy authorities to conduct thorough investigations into reported irregularities and allegations of fraud.

Furthermore, they emphasize the implementation of necessary reforms as suggested by both international and domestic observers.

The statement underscores the importance of addressing the needs and desires of the Malagasy citizens for the peace and future well-being of the nation.

The United States is urging Madagascar to demonstrate unwavering commitment to the democratic process, adherence to the constitution, and the rule of law.

Emphasizing the right of the Malagasy people to free and fair elections conducted peacefully, the U.S. government encourages Madagascar to instill confidence in its institutions and safeguard the integrity of future elections.

Condemning all forms of violence, the United States appeals to the Malagasy people to channel any election-related grievances through established legal processes.

As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, awaiting actions that will uphold democratic values and principles in Madagascar.
