Sporting Lagos made a big statement on their maiden appearance in the Nigeria Premier Football League edging out Gombe United 2-0 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos on Monday night.

The modest side that was founded less than a year ago gained promotion to the NPFL last season.

Rivio Ayemwerene scored their first-ever top-flight goal three minutes before the break.

Ayemwerene rose highest to nod home Jonathan Alukwu’s cross.

Clement Nantuan netted the second 11 minutes from time.

Gombe United were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time but it was fluffed by Mojeeb Odufeso.

Sporting Lagos will travel to Uyo for their next game against former champions Akwa United in Uyo on Sunday.

Gombe United will host defending champions Enyimba same day.
