Rano Air Flight Safely Lands After Mid-Air Engine Failure.

A Rano Air flight bound for Kano from Sokoto experienced a serious mid-air incident on Sunday when one of its engines failed, prompting swift action from the flight crew to ensure the safety of all passengers and crew. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has since grounded the aircraft, registered as 5N-BZY, pending a thorough investigation into the incident.

According to Michael Achimugu, the NCAA’s director of public affairs and consumer protection, the aircraft encountered a failure in its number one engine, with smoke observed in both the cabin and flight deck. The crew promptly donned oxygen masks and initiated emergency protocols to prepare for a safe landing. Fortunately, the smoke dissipated before the aircraft touched down, and the pilot successfully landed the plane at Sokoto airport without further incident.

The NCAA has mandated that the aircraft remain grounded until engineers complete their investigation into the cause of the engine failure and the source of the smoke. This decisive action underscores Nigeria’s commitment to aviation safety, with the NCAA emphasising that flights are cancelled at the slightest concern to prevent risks. The incident caused disruptions for passengers, particularly those scheduled to travel from Sokoto to other destinations, but the authority prioritised safety above all.

Controversy arose when it was alleged that Rano Air cleared the same aircraft for a return flight to Kano shortly after the incident, only for it to make a U-turn back to Sokoto due to fresh issues. The NCAA’s prompt grounding of the aircraft has been praised as a proactive measure to ensure no further risks are taken until the investigation is concluded.

Passengers affected by the cancellation are expected to be accommodated in line with Rano Air’s obligations under consumer protection laws. The incident serves as a reminder of the stringent safety protocols in place within Nigeria’s aviation sector, with the NCAA reaffirming its dedication to maintaining high safety standards.
