President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Tunde Onakoya for his outstanding achievement in setting a new world chess record.

Through an official statement released on the president’s X account, Onakoya’s accomplishment is hailed as a symbol of Nigeria’s resilience, self-belief, and ingenuity on the global stage.

Tinubu lauded Onakoya’s exceptional feat as both a Nigerian Chess Champion and the founder of Chess in Slums Africa, emphasising the noble cause behind his record-breaking endeavour: raising funds to support African children’s education through chess.

In his message, President Tinubu highlighted the inherent audacity and innovative spirit characteristic of Nigeria’s youth, exemplified by Onakoya’s determination to effect positive change and overcome challenges, even in disadvantaged circumstances.

The president underscored the broader trend of Nigerian youth excelling across various fields, ranging from entertainment (Afrobeats, Nollywood) to education, science, and technology, reaffirming the notion that remarkable achievements can indeed emerge from humble beginnings.

Commending the unity displayed by Nigerians in rallying behind Onakoya’s historic achievement, President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s steadfast commitment to creating and expanding opportunities for youth empowerment.

Renowned chess champion Tunde Onakoya has clinched a remarkable feat, setting a new 60-hour chess marathon record in Times Square, New York. Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu extended his heartfelt congratulations to Onakoya, praising his journey from Lagos, Nigeria, to global recognition as emblematic of the city’s spirit.

Governor Sanwo-Olu lauded Onakoya’s perseverance and determination, highlighting his rise from humble beginnings to international acclaim. The governor emphasised Onakoya’s inspiring story as a testament to the potential for greatness within everyone, regardless of their background.

Onakoya, alongside US chess master Shawn Martinez, captivated audiences in Times Square with their non-stop chess marathon, drawing support from Nigerians and New Yorkers alike. Their endeavour, spanning 60 hours, aimed to empower underprivileged children through Onakoya’s foundation, Chess in Slums Africa.

In response to the monumental achievement, Onakoya’s foundation underscored the significance of the record-breaking attempt, framing it as a beacon of hope for millions of children striving to pursue their dreams despite adversities.

Onakoya’s ambitious goal of raising $1 million to support education initiatives for disadvantaged youth across Africa further amplifies the impact of his accomplishment.
