The National Identity Management Commission, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System, is set to introduce an upgraded National Identity card with added payment capabilities and social service features.

Revealed by Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, the new card, powered by AfriGO, aims to fulfill the requirements of the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, providing citizens and legal residents with a comprehensive multipurpose card for identification and accessing various government and private services.

This initiative is expected to enhance financial inclusion, citizen empowerment, and participation in national development efforts, with eligibility limited to registered individuals possessing the National Identification Number.

Additionally, the card will comply with international data protection standards, ensuring the security and confidentiality of cardholders’ information while offering diverse functionalities such as debit/prepaid card capabilities and integration with government intervention programs.
