Brigadier General Gabriel Olufemi Esho has been appointed as the Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

Brigadier General Esho, a native of Ondo State in western Nigeria, has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication throughout his career in the Nigerian Army.

Graduating from the renowned Nigerian Defense Academy with honors in Mathematics and a master’s degree in Strategic Studies, his remarkable military acumen and commitment to service have been evident since his early days.

His appointment to MINURSO, a mission established by the UN Security Council to oversee the referendum on self-determination for the people of Western Sahara, underscores the UN’s commitment to diversifying its peacekeeping forces and recognizing talent from across the globe.

Brigadier General Esho’s vision for MINURSO focuses on engaging with the local Sahrawi people, promoting dialogue, and fostering trust within the communities, emphasizing that sustainable peace can only be achieved through understanding and collaboration.

Brigadier General Esho’s achievement serves as an inspiration to aspiring Nigerian military personnel and young individuals across Africa.

With Brigadier General Esho at the helm, MINURSO is poised to witness a renewed spirit and empowered force working towards peace and reconciliation in Western Sahara.

The official transfer of responsibilities between Brigadier General Esho and his predecessor, witnessed by key officials including the Head of Mission and Special Representative of the Secretary-General Mr. Alexander Ivanko and Force Commander Maj Gen MD Fakhrul Ahsan, marks the beginning of a new chapter in the mission’s endeavors.
