The Edo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Agun Gbenga, slumped and died on Thursday shortly after delivering a goodwill message at a public event in Benin City.

The incident occurred at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre during a ceremony organised by the International Association of World Peace Advocates.

Witnesses said the commandant had just concluded his address and returned to his seat when he suddenly collapsed. An attendee explained, “He finished speaking and then slumped. Efforts were made to revive him but he could not recover.” The sudden development threw the event into confusion as participants rushed to provide immediate assistance.

Reports confirmed that he was quickly taken to the Military Hospital on Airport Road in Benin City. Medical personnel attempted to stabilize him but he was pronounced dead on arrival. The shocking loss of the commandant left colleagues and members of the security community in mourning.

The Edo State Command of the NSCDC later released a statement expressing grief over the tragedy. The spokesperson said, “It is with a heavy heart that we confirm the passing of Commandant Agun Gbenga. He was a loyal officer, a dedicated leader and a man who gave his best to the service of Nigeria.”

Tributes began pouring in from security agencies, civic groups and government officials who praised the late officer’s commitment and professionalism. A colleague described him as “a disciplined leader who commanded respect and inspired confidence among his men.” His sudden death was described as a painful reminder of the strain that comes with national service.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps assured that more details about burial arrangements would be announced after consultations with his family. The Corps appealed to the public to respect the privacy of the bereaved relatives while honoring the memory of a distinguished officer who dedicated his life to public service.
