Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, representing the United States Mission to the United Nations, commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

Adopted on December 10, 1948, the UDHR established a global standard for human dignity, emphasizing the inherent, equal, and inalienable rights of every individual worldwide.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield highlighted the enduring significance of the UDHR, which continues to embody foundational principles in international human rights law.

The declaration reflects shared aspirations for equality and dignity, irrespective of location or identity, and underscores the responsibility of governments worldwide to promote and protect human rights.

In her statement, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield reaffirmed the commitment of the Biden Administration to advancing human rights domestically and globally.

Acknowledging that no country possesses a flawless human rights record, she emphasized the importance of open and democratic societies where people can advocate for change through democratic and judicial processes, exercising their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

As the world celebrates the 75th year of the UDHR, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield called for a renewed commitment to advancing human rights universally.

She urged the strengthening of partnerships across governments, civil society, the private sector, and beyond. The ambassador emphasized collective action, expressing the belief that, together, a future can be built with opportunity, equality, and dignity for all.
