Nigeria Olympic Committee Commences Construction Of Permanent Secretariat In Abuja.

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has broken ground on its permanent secretariat in Abuja, Nigeria, aiming to transform sports administration in the country. Located in the Federal Capital Territory, the facility will house offices, training centres, centers and a sports museum, serving as a hub for athlete development.

NOC President Habu Gumel described the project as a milestone for Nigeria’s Olympic movement, noting its role in coordinating international events. Funded through partnerships with government and private sponsors, the secretariat is slated for completion by 2027, with a cost of ₦2.5 billion. Sports Minister John Enoji Enoh hailed it as a boost for Nigeria’s global sporting aspirations.

Nigeria’s sports sector faces challenges like underfunding, funding, with the NOC operating from rented offices for years. The new secretariat will centralize operations, enhancing efficiency and athlete support. Gumel emphasized its potential for hosting events like the African Games, aligning with Nigeria’s bid for 2030.

Public reactions on X are largely positive, with fans excited about the museum showcasing stars like Blessing Okagbare. However, some question the project’s cost amid economic hardships, urging transparency. Analysts see the secretariat as a long-term investment, provided it prioritizes grassroots sports.

The groundbreaking marks a bold step for the NOC, with stakeholders hopeful it will elevate Nigeria’s Olympic profile. As construction progresses, the project symbolizes Nigeria’s ambition to reclaim its sporting glory, contingent on effective management and sustained funding.
