Meta To Cut 600 Jobs In Artificial Intelligence Division

Meta Platforms Inc. has announced plans to lay off approximately 600 employees from its artificial intelligence division as part of a strategic reorganization aimed at streamlining operations and increasing efficiency.

The affected teams include members of the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) unit, AI product teams, and AI infrastructure groups. The restructuring is designed to simplify decision-making processes while maintaining the company’s focus on high-priority AI projects.

Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, who joined Meta earlier this year from Scale AI, explained in an internal memo that smaller team sizes would reduce the number of conversations needed to make decisions and increase individual impact. Wang encouraged affected employees to explore other internal opportunities, with many expected to be reassigned to different roles within the company.

The layoffs come as Meta continues to invest heavily in AI technology, including a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI. These strategic moves are intended to position the company more competitively in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape, allowing it to keep pace with global tech rivals.

The newly established TBD Lab, which focuses on developing advanced large language models like the Llama system, remains unaffected by the layoffs and continues to hire new talent. Meta has emphasized that this division will play a key role in the company’s superintelligence initiatives, reflecting its commitment to AI innovation despite workforce reductions.

Industry analysts note that Meta’s decision aligns with a broader trend across the tech sector to optimize AI operations and prioritize high-impact projects. Unlike some competitors, Meta continues to open-source its Llama models, aiming to foster broader adoption and collaboration in artificial intelligence development.

As the company navigates these organizational changes, Meta remains committed to its goal of advancing artificial superintelligence while creating agile and focused teams. The company is adapting its structure to ensure that AI innovation continues at a rapid pace, positioning Meta for success in the future of technology.
