INEC Embraces Artificial Intelligence To Strengthen Electoral Process.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken a significant step towards enhancing the integrity and efficiency of Nigeria’s electoral process by establishing an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Division within its ICT Department. This move aims to harness the benefits of AI while mitigating its potential risks in electoral activities.

Harnessing AI for Electoral Benefits

The decision to create the AI Division was reached at INEC’s regular weekly meeting, where the commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, highlighted the growing relevance of AI in elections globally. The division will focus on:

– *Data-Driven Decision-Making*: Providing insights to inform electoral decisions and improve the overall efficiency of the electoral process.

– *Risk Detection and Mitigation*: Identifying potential risks and developing strategies to mitigate them, ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.

– *Voter Services Automation*: Enhancing voter engagement and services through automation, making the electoral process more accessible and convenient.

Centralised AI Governance

The AI Division will enable INEC to better coordinate and maximise its existing technology investments through centralised AI governance. This will ensure a harmonised approach to deploying intelligent systems that enhance decision-making, improve voter engagement, and boost electoral credibility.

Strengthening Electoral Credibility

The initiative is expected to strengthen electoral credibility through predictive analytics, automation, and intelligent safeguards. According to Olumekun, the creation of the AI Division puts INEC at the forefront of institutionalising AI capabilities in electoral management, reflecting the commission’s commitment to embracing innovation in safeguarding democracy.

A Step Forward in Electoral Reform

The establishment of the AI Division is part of INEC’s ongoing reform efforts, aimed at improving the electoral process through administrative actions. This development underscores INEC’s dedication to leveraging technology to enhance the integrity and transparency of Nigeria’s electoral process.
