The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously adopted a groundbreaking resolution spearheaded by the United States, aimed at shaping the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) worldwide. Secretary of State Antony J.

Blinken hailed the momentous occasion as a unified step towards establishing a framework for the safe, secure, and trustworthy deployment of AI technologies to drive sustainable development.

This consensus resolution, crafted in collaboration with over 120 nations and supported by an equal number of Member States spanning diverse regions, marks a pivotal milestone in global efforts to harness the potential of AI responsibly.

Recognising the immense potential of AI in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the resolution emphasises inclusivity, with a focus on ensuring that the benefits of AI are accessible to nations at all developmental stages. It underscores the importance of capacity building and narrowing digital divides, particularly in developing nations.

Crucially, the resolution reaffirms the compatibility of AI advancements with the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, aligning with aspirations for sustainable development.

The resolution underscores the necessity for collaborative efforts between governments, private sector entities, civil society, international organisations, academia, and technical communities to effectively implement the proposed framework. It lays the groundwork for future multilateral AI initiatives within the UN and beyond.

The United States pledges continued collaboration with its global counterparts and stakeholders to ensure that emerging technologies, including AI, are developed and utilised in a manner that prioritises safety, security, and trustworthiness, addresses shared challenges, and advances common goals.
