Tragedy Strikes As Petrol Tanker Explosion Claims 90 Lives In Jigawa.

In a tragic incident, at least 90 people have lost their lives following an explosion involving a petrol-laden tanker on the Kano-Hadejia expressway in Jigawa State. The explosion occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, 16th October, in Majiya village, located in the Taura Local Government Area.

According to the Jigawa State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Lawal Adams, the victims were reportedly scooping petrol from the tanker when the explosion occurred. The tanker, which was transporting petrol from Port Harcourt to Nguru in Yobe State, lost control and overturned, causing its contents to spill into the village’s gutters and drainages.

Tragically, as villagers gathered to collect the spilled fuel, the petrol ignited, resulting in a devastating explosion that claimed the lives of 90 people. DSP Adams further stated that 50 others sustained injuries of varying degrees and are currently receiving medical treatment.

“The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 am when the driver of the tanker lost control, leading to the spill of its content. Unfortunately, the resulting fire caused the deaths of 90 individuals, and 50 others have been hospitalised,” DSP Adams said in his statement.

This incident highlights the dangers associated with the illegal scooping of fuel, and the authorities have urged members of the public to avoid such activities, which pose a significant risk to life and property.

Emergency services and local authorities are working to assist the affected families, and further investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
