Nigeria’s Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, has announced Nigeria’s firm endorsement of Brazil’s Valdecy Urquiza as the candidate for the Interpol Secretary General position.

This endorsement came during a momentous visit by the Interpol team, led by Vice President Urquiza, to the Ministry of Police Affairs headquarters in Abuja.

Gaidam, speaking on behalf of Nigeria, emphasized Urquiza’s candidacy as emblematic of a new era in Interpol’s leadership.

He cited Urquiza’s extensive experience and unwavering commitment as qualities that make him a formidable contender for the role of Secretary General.

The Minister stressed the importance of a fair and transparent election process, urging all of Nigeria’s partners and allies to unite in support of Urquiza’s candidacy.

Highlighting the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and Brazil across various domains, Gaidam underscored their collaboration in law enforcement and security matters, including joint efforts to combat drug trafficking and other transnational crimes.

He reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to fostering global peace and security through effective international cooperation, with Interpol playing a pivotal role in this endeavour.

Vice President Urquiza expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s support, emphasising the significance of having a Secretary General from a developing nation who can bring diversity and impartiality to Interpol.

He pledged to prioritise the needs of member countries, focusing on reforms that would better serve the collective interests of all nations.

The endorsement of Valdecy Urquiza by Nigeria signifies a strategic alignment between two influential nations in the pursuit of strengthening global security cooperation under the auspices of Interpol. As the election process unfolds, all eyes remain on the promising prospects of a reinvigorated leadership poised to address the complex security challenges of the 21st century.
