Rafael Nadal bids an emotional farewell to the Madrid Open as he hints at retirement after the 2024 season.

Despite losing in straight sets to Jiri Lehecka, the former world number one expressed gratitude for a special week at the tournament.

“I’m happy,” Nadal remarked after his 7-5 6-4 defeat, reflecting on the emotional and positive experience of playing at Madrid Open one last time.

Acknowledging the support and tributes, Nadal expressed his intention to return next year. He cherished the gift of playing in Madrid, especially in front of the Spanish fans, emphasizing his gratitude for the career and life he has had.

Lehecka capitalized on opportunities, overpowering Nadal at crucial moments. However, Nadal’s resilience and positive mindset were evident throughout the match.

Nadal’s return to competitive tennis after a three-month injury break showcased his determination. With three victories in Madrid, he heads towards the French Open with confidence, aiming for a final appearance at Roland Garros.

Meanwhile, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz survived a tough challenge from Jan-Lennard Struff, maintaining his winning streak at the Madrid Open. Alcaraz’s resilience and victory set up an exciting quarter-final clash with Russian Andrey Rublev.

Italian top seed Jannik Sinner also advanced, setting the stage for an intense competition as players gear up for further challenges at the Madrid Open.
