The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has announced the appointment of a new Sector Commander for Osun State as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen road safety administration and operational efficiency across Nigeria.

The development reflects the Corps’ broader commitment to reducing road traffic crashes and improving compliance with safety regulations nationwide.

Official Announcement

The appointment of Mr. Sunday Adebayo as the new Sector Commander for Osun State was confirmed in a statement issued in Osogbo by the command’s spokesperson, Agnes Ogungbemi.

Ogungbemi described Adebayo as a seasoned officer with extensive experience in road safety administration, traffic management, and stakeholder engagement. She emphasized that his track record of professionalism and dedication to duty earned him the confidence of the FRSC leadership.

The posting was approved by the Corps Marshal, Mohammed Shehu, who has continued to oversee strategic redeployments aimed at improving the Corps’ effectiveness nationwide.

Background of the Appointment

The appointment forms part of a wider reshuffling within the FRSC, involving the redeployment of senior officers across various state commands.

Such administrative changes are routine within the Corps and are designed to:
  • Inject fresh leadership into state operations

  • Strengthen enforcement and compliance mechanisms

  • Enhance service delivery and operational efficiency

Adebayo’s emergence as Sector Commander underscores the FRSC’s focus on placing experienced personnel in key leadership roles to drive its mandate.

Leadership Transition in Osun Command

Mr. Sunday Adebayo takes over from Leye Adegboyega, who previously served as Sector Commander in Osun State. Adegboyega has since been promoted to the rank of Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM), and redeployed as Zonal Commanding Officer in Bauchi State.

Prior to Adegboyega’s tenure, the Osun Command had also been led by Taofeeq Sokumbi, reflecting the Corps’ policy of periodic rotation to maintain efficiency and prevent institutional stagnation.

Profile and Responsibilities of the New Commander

Mr. Sunday Adebayo is regarded as a highly experienced officer within the FRSC system.

His professional background includes expertise in:
  • Road safety policy implementation

  • Traffic control and enforcement strategies

  • Stakeholder collaboration with transport unions and government agencies

As Sector Commander, his core responsibilities will include:
  • Supervising all FRSC operations within Osun State

  • Enforcing traffic laws and ensuring compliance

  • Coordinating rescue and emergency response efforts

  • Leading public enlightenment campaigns on road safety

  • Managing personnel and administrative functions within the command

According to the FRSC, Adebayo is committed to ensuring effective service delivery and improving road safety outcomes in the state.

Role of FRSC in National Road Safety

The Federal Road Safety Corps, established in 1988, is mandated to promote safe road use and reduce accidents across Nigeria.

Its functions include:
  • Making highways safer for motorists and pedestrians

  • Enforcing road traffic laws

  • Conducting public education campaigns

  • Providing timely response to road traffic emergencies

Sector Commanders play a critical role in translating national policies into actionable strategies at the state level.

Implications for Osun State

The appointment of Mr. Sunday Adebayo is expected to bring renewed momentum to road safety management in Osun State.

Key anticipated impacts include:
  • Stronger Enforcement: Improved monitoring and sanctioning of traffic violations

  • Enhanced Public Awareness: Increased outreach and education for road users

  • Better Coordination: Strengthened collaboration with security agencies and stakeholders

  • Operational Efficiency: Faster and more effective emergency response systems

Given the persistent challenges of road accidents in Nigeria, effective leadership at the state level remains essential.

Conclusion

The appointment of Mr. Sunday Adebayo as the new Sector Commander for Osun State highlights the FRSC’s strategic approach to leadership renewal and institutional strengthening. Backed by the confidence of Corps Marshal Mohammed Shehu, Adebayo is expected to drive improved performance, enforce compliance, and enhance road safety outcomes across the state.

His success will depend on sustained enforcement, stakeholder engagement, and the ability to align state-level operations with the FRSC’s national road safety objectives.
