On Sunday, September 15, 2024, fifteen children lost their lives in a tragic auto crash along Saminaka Road in Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The incident occurred around 1 pm when a J5 bus, carrying 63 children en route to Eld El Maulud celebrations, collided with an oncoming articulated vehicle.

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander Kabiru Nadabo confirmed the devastating accident. According to Nadabo, “The driver of the J5 bus lost control due to overspeeding, resulting in the fatal crash. Fifteen children died instantly, while 48 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.”

Nadabo underscored the urgent need for strict adherence to road safety measures. “This accident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving. We urge drivers to exercise caution and adhere to speed limits to prevent such tragedies.”

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with one witness recounting, “I saw the bus swerve out of control and collide with the articulated vehicle. It was a horrific sight, and my heart goes out to the families of the victims.”

The injured were rushed to Comprehensive Hospital in Saminaka, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Dabo Lere Memorial Hospital. The FRSC has launched a thorough investigation into the accident.

“This accident is a wake-up call for all drivers to prioritize road safety,” Nadabo stated. “We will continue to educate drivers on the importance of safe driving practices.”
